Switching my domain and blog to self hosted wordpress, questions

    Hi everyone,

I’m searching and reading as much as I can regarding switching from wordpress.com to self hosted wordpress (wordpress.org and bluehost).

    I have a few questions!

    1) I have my own domain, savory.tv, which I have been using here at wordpress.com. Will my links from google redirect or is there something I specifically need to do to enable this? I am assuming I will keep my page rank?

    2) With regards to domain mapping, will I have to resubmit a new site map to google when I switch?

Thank you very much in advance!

    1) Your links will follow you, no worries. You will lose any pagerank based on Oldname.Wordpress.Com but otherwise will keep it. You will lose pagerank resulting from links from WP.com global tag pages, however. That’s unavoidable, but you should make it up in a few months, four at the outside provided you post regularly.

    2) I don’t know, but it can’t hurt.

Raincoaster, ever so helpful, thank you. I never really had a oldname.wordpress.com, so I guess that is good. I am worried about losing the global tag pages however, as I am not in this for the money at this point, I only want visitors. Perhaps I should stay a while, and I would if videos were easier to embed and customize. It’s been a great start and I’m so pleased to have been here. Have you migrated a blog yourself?

I haven’t migrated a blog, but I’ve investigated it fully. There’s no way around losing the boost from the global tag pages: think of it as a glider plane, using the boost from a powered plane to take off. Once it’s aloft, it soars under its own steam.
