tags and categories, on stats page
On the new addition to the stats page, Tags and Categories (Most popular topics you’ve written about), my 4th most popular category is Uncategorized. I never use it. If you click on it, no posts show up. How could it possibly be popular?
The blog I need help with is leavingbabylon.wordpress.com.
The uncategorized category is the default category. It’s automatically assigned to all posts unless you remove the checkmark in the Categories module of the posts.
You can create a different default category.
If you do not want the default category to appear on your posts then edit the posts and remove it and click “update”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
I always remove the checkmark. The Uncat category is not assigned to any of my posts.
So why does it show in the stats?
Wow! That’s very odd and only Staff can answer your question so I’ll flag this thread for their attention.
If I were you, I’d go to Settings->General and choose another default category (might be Settings->Writing though). There is some weirdness with categories and tags; my blog says I have 46 tags, when I have never used tags, ever.
Hm, very odd. We’ll look into this.
Raincoaster, I think I will choose another default category eventually. Thanks. I will leave it now so that the fixers can see it as it has been.
I would like to add that the Uncategorized category has scored another point since I wrote this query. Weird.
A day later. There were 65 clicks on Uncategorized yesterday. Now there are 95. What ghostly clickers my blog is populated with, oh my!
As a little girl named Alice once observed: This just keeps gettin curiouser and curiouser.
It gets better, timethief. Today, there are only 92 clicks. Apparently, some of the ghosts changed their minds and took their votes back… (!)
This is blog fodder, sure. I can’t wait to hear what’s causing this GHOSTLY inflation and deflation … cue … Twilight Zone music.
Well, the ghosts are fleeing, today the number is at 76.
I am giving up on this, have closed the window on my stats and advise everyone to ignore these bogus numbers.
Only 76 GHOST hits on non-existent category today – fascinating! I want Staff to respond to this so I flagged it for their attention.
Sorry for the delay, we are still investigating this.
Good to know and it’s spooky.
Alright, we have an answer. I originally glossed over it because I was expecting something more interesting and spooky.
So, you have 24 published pages. Despite not outwardly displaying categories (or being able to set categories), pages are still technically categorized under the default category. Since your default category is still Uncategorized, you have 24 pages categorized as Uncategorized.
Of course, the fact that this is factored in stats is in fact a bug, and we will take care of that, but sadly the mystery itself is not as spooky as I had hoped.
You’re all fixed up now. Sorry about that!
