tags v categories

In my posts, I use categories, not tags. Clicking on the category links to the WP collection blog posts with the same category. Does the use of tags link to my posts under the same tag? If so, how do I convert categories into tags? The catevory vs tags WP article didnt really tell me anything, and clicking convert categories into tags prompted me to import something.

What am I missing, I’m sure the answer is simple, but for whatever reason, it eludes me.

Both Categories and Tags are treated the same way by WordPress.com when it comes to the global tags pages and by search engines. All Categories and Tags we assign to posts that appear, depending on the theme, above, below or at the side of post direct to the WordPress.com global tags pages. All links to posts displayed by categories and/or Tags widgets direct only to posts in your blog. This is normal behavior.

If you create categories and Tags using the same words you will have editing problems. If you still want to convert categories to tags please see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/#converting-tags-to-categories

So then tags, when clicked on my posts, do not link internally to other posts on my page, but rather to the global tag page?

It does not matter whether your visitors click the Categories or tags links on your posts. In either both direct to the WordPress.com global tags pages. However, if they click either Categories or Tags links displayed by the Categories or Tags widget they will be directed to Categories pages or Tags pages that list all the links to all posts that you have assigned to them.

There is only one theme, iNove that you can use here that has the Theme options that allow suppression of all Categories and Tags display on your blog. On all other themes to suppress the display of categories and Tags links one has to purchase an annually renewable CSS editing upgrade.
