Text formatting problem while posting
please help me out in formatting the text in wordpress correctly… I am posting the story and when i publish it, the paragraphs don’t seems to appear correctly. can anybody help me out with this situation??
Are you copying/pasting from Word?
Just don’t do it. It’ll give you a headache. Word sticks in all sorts of odd html when you copy/paste.
Copy your text into a plain text editor like Notepad (I like Notepad++).
I think there’s a clean up button in the visual editor that you can try.
I’m using a Mac and typing directly into the post block and it does likewise-if this is a gimmick to try to force people to purchase upgrades, then I’m done with wordpress. Please enlighten if you know anything.
I suspect you are using Safari. The TinyMCE editor that wordpress uses for writing pages and posts is not fully compatible with Safari and you will find problems in other areas as well. Hopefully when Safari 3 comes out of beta, TinyMCE will get to work and become compatible.
I would suggest downloading the Firefox or Camino browsers to use with wordpress as they are the most compatible with wordpress.
Alternately, you can go to “my profile” in the upper right of your dashboard and uncheck “use visual rich text editor,” click “update profile and then you will be doing all your writing in code view. Some, including myself, find this a little confusing since in addition to the text of your post, you will see all the html code for your formatting.
Another alternative is to use an offline blog editor. Timethief has rounded up all the most popular and listed them on her wordpress resources blog at: http://wpbloggingtips.wordpress.com/2007/10/26/offline-blog-editors-reviews/
Can you please give us a link to an example and explain what you intended to happen? How do the paragraphs appear “incorrect?” It’s easier to help you if you are very specific about your problem.
Note that if you wish to be very creative with your formatting, eg posting a poem in the shame of a Christmas tree, etc, WordPress.com is probably not for you and you’ll be better off with an independently-hosted WordPress blog. We have limited formatting options here; it is possible to post a poem in the shape of a Christmas tree, but it’s not easy.
By the way, the problem started with Safari which hasn’t supported some of the advanced scripting used for the online editors such as TinyMCE, and it’s something that is out of the hands of WordPress.
Safari is a great browser and I use it a lot and as I said, I’m hoping TinyMCE will get things ironed out as soon as Safari 3 is out of beta.

sulz and I discovered a year ago or more that if formating of poetry etc. is a problem then, it’s possible to create an image with the correct formating and upload the image into a post. Perhaps this technique will be workable for you.
Yep, that’s what I was thinking of. Of which I was thinking. Whatever.
Now that Safari is an official release (I believe it came out of beta with the launch of Leopard), this link is describing it as “partially working”. Hopefully this means that development is ongoing and it will be fully working at some point in the near future.
Of course, the “it” that I’m referring to is TinyMCE. I really should error-check before hitting the post button.
The Windows version of Safari is definitely still in beta and it could be they are waiting it to reach final release status before they start work (speculation).
Mark had mentioned in another thread (don’t have a link) that once it came out of beta, that TinyMCE and also WordPress would work on making it compatible. WordPress has some work to do as well as it’s not totally compatible with the admin interface.
Ah, I was assuming we were talking about the Mac version – I keep forgetting there’s a Windows version! Wasn’t aware that was still in beta.
Merry Christmas wolfieb!
[waves at tt] Same goes back to you – and to all the peeps here today!
