Themes that don't use Google Fonts or Google CDN?

  1. Google can spy on your readers if you use a theme that includes Google Fonts or that loads e.g. jQuery from Google's CDN. One way to combat this is to tell your users to install Firefox and Decentraleyes, but I'd much prefer if my theme wouldn't use Google CDN, Google Analytics or Google Fonts at all.

Are there such themes on WordPress.com or is everything there dependent on Google?

I know that in WordPress' source, there are some hardcoded (!) references to Google's CDN and it's a pain to get rid of them, one has to patch the admin section code by hand on every upgrade.

  2. Most of our themes use Google Fonts; there may be some older theme that rely on system fonts like Verdana or Georgia but we do not maintain a list.

With a Premium or Business plan you may choose a font from our Typekit collection, instead.

If you need full control over the CDNs your site uses, you might like to consider a self-hosted WordPress install where you run the WordPress software on your hosting.

There is no file access on WordPress.com so editing files directly this wouldn't be something you can do here.

  3. Thanks! The reason I stopped self-hosting was that with the frequent security updates, it became a chore to keep hand-patching the hardcoded parts.

In that case the tradeoff is to go Premium and protect the readers (I myself can use Decentraleyes to get by the hardcoded parts of the admin area) or to host it myself and protect both myself and the readers.

With TypeKit, Adobe's privacy policy at least states that they don't collect referrer information, which is a step in the right direction, though they still know which pages were served and can potentially aggregate that.

Do you know if there are any plans to reduce reliance on Google for WordPress, meaning also removing the hardcoded bits and e.g. flagging themes that load external resources as such so that they could be filtered in the theme gallery?

  4. Do you know if there are any plans to reduce reliance on Google for WordPress

No, there aren't any plans to reduce our themes' use of Google Fonts that I know of.
