Tools-> Export function not working on my blog

Hello: Hope someone can offer some help. I would like to export all content from my wordpress.com blog (3 years worth of blog content, pictures, video and comments) over to a new workpress.org blog that I am in the process of setting up. I went into the Tools-> export feature on the dashboard, but I get an error message and it does not export the xml file to my computer.

The error message says this: Internet Explorer cannot download export.php from . . .asgardenwriter.wordpress.com.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

I was able to get the export to work on two other wordpress.com blogs that I have, so I know it ought to work, but it’s not working on this particular blog, and I’m not sure why.

I can only login to the dashboard for this blog in Internet Explorer–I never have been able to do so in Chrome or Firefox, it just doesn’t work.

I look forward to any suggestions that you have! Thank you.

The blog I need help with is minervasgardenwriter.wordpress.com.

What version of IE are you using?

In any event, try logging out of WordPress.com, clearing your browser cache and cookies, shutting down the browser and then opening it again.

If that still doesn’t work for you, contact Support directly http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

On the import end, you should leave your related com blog up and public until the importer has completed grabbing all your media files.

Perhaps the answer given in this forum thread will also help you. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/tools-export-function-not-working?replies=10#post-823929

Hi: Thank you for the suggestions. I am using IE8. I will now try your other suggestions and see if it helps.

I just tried logging out of WordPress.com, clearing my browser cache and cookies, shutting down the browser and then opening it again. It did not work. And thank you for the tip on importing. I will look at the other forum thread for help next.

After reading that other thread, maybe this plays into my problem: My blog is 3 years old, and has 146 posts that I am trying to export.

I read this comment in the other thread:

“I make a backup export every month, and I had the same problem exporting my blog’s contents at the end of January. Staff told me: “The number of your posts are very high so the export function may be timing out. I suggest you to export the contents in parts, separating the posts by date”

So that’s what I’ve been doing. It’s a clumsy workaround, but that’s the deal.”

Do you have any suggestions for how to export my blog’s content in parts, separating the posts by date? I don’t know how to do that.

Thank you for your help–I look forward to your response!

Under Tools>Export>Choose what to export, change the button from “All Content” to “Posts” and more options will open.

I’m sorry, but if you have any other question, another forum volunteer will be along to assist. It’s very late night here and I must head offline.

Thank you–I will give it a try.

So I tried exporting a small number of posts using the Tools>Export.Choose, changing “all Content” to just “posts”, but I still get the same error message.

I understand that Justjennifer is gone, but if anyone else is out there and monitoring this, I would love to hear from you. I will also try contacting Support directly.

I posted that earlier comment you quoted about having a high number of posts. But I have over 2,800 posts, so what I was told by staff didn’t seem unreasonable. If you have only 146 posts, it sounds like there’s something wrong with the Export function.

Thank you for the comment. I just contacted Support directly, so hopefully they will have a suggestion to fix the problem.

    Thank you.

    @ minervasgardenwriter

Have you had any success with this as I am experiencing a similar problem ??

    #829111

No, not yet. Still waiting to hear back from Support.

I tested exporting from http://minervasgardenwriter.wordpress.com/ and the export worked in my test without any problems. I tested with Firefox 10.0.2 as well as IE8, and I used the “All content” option on the Tools → Export page.

I’m trying to figure out why the export isn’t working for you because I think it should be working. Can you please try clearing your browser cache and cookies and then try the export again as a troubleshooting step to make sure you tried that?

I never have been able to do so in Chrome or Firefox, it just doesn’t work

This sounds very strange. What errors do you see when you try to log in with Chrome or Firefox? Are you using recent versions of those browsers?

The error message says this: Internet Explorer cannot download export.php from . . .asgardenwriter.wordpress.com.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Based on this error that you posted, it actually sounds like possibly like a local network issue to me. It’s hard to say just based on the information you’ve provided so far (which is good btw, thank you for posting the error message and your browser version!). If this same error comes up again after you clear browser cookies, then some kind of filter or firewall rule may be blocking downloads. Do you know if there’s anything setup on your network which might cause a problem like that?

Is there any chance at all you can try the export from a totally different location with a different internet connection? This would test my theory of it being a local network issue.

If that’s too much trouble or if you don’t want to take the time to debug, let me know and I will email you an export file manually. However, if there is a problem on our side, then I would like to find out what it is! :)

Heh, I just read back and see that you already tried clearing cookies. Sorry I missed that before! Let me know if you can test from a different location or if you would prefer a backup sent by email.

    #829176

I would really like a backup sent to me via email–thank you.

I will try to go to a different computer at a different location later today, but can’t guarantee that due to my work schedule.

    Thank you.
