It is now. Support and explanations were not helpful to counter such attacks.
Other bloggers should know what to do if attacked like myself. Things like this should be general knowledge. Not left up to green bloggers like me to struggle to find a solution on their own. We are not experts. I am 67, not well and I want to have fun on my blog, not spending hours as I was initially clicking spam on countless garbage comments in my notifier.

You were not attacked. Even a crap Blogspot could withstand ten thousand times that amount of spam.

Then why initially did I have spam loads of these comments in my notifier ? And why was I not told by Staff how to stop them getting into my notifier. ? By trial and error I played with the comment blacklist until no more entered my notifier.

I am going to write to the CEO of WP about this. Support is designed for geeks not bloggers. Explaining how to do anything could be made a lot simpler and more easily understood by the common man or woman.
You talk to me as if I am an idiot. When you get countless comments such as these on your notifier and all you are told is spam them. Thank you very much !! No hint of blacklisting. Nothing, just spam them !! I was on my own to keep my notifier clear with no more coming in. How many other bloggers are facing this alone ???

You should not have needed to blacklist the IP.
However, a very common spam tactic is to see if they can get a single comment approved, at that point they will hammer the blog that approved the spam comment and render the blog useless – I have also seen spammers render a site / forum useless in a few hours.
If I were you, I would go back an see if something might have slipped by early on. I moderate my comments and are quite brutal in what I will let through. In December my worst spam month so far, I had about 175 spam comments go straight to gone with about 25 to 35 that I needed to moderate and clear. So as you can see my spam count is way lower than yours and that is why my suggestion above is to double check what was approved.

Yes I approved 1 comment in January. It was a comment about poetry in a poetry post. I didn’t know then what havoc it would cause. My apologies.

No need to apologize – you are the one that got their blog hammered with spam not mine.

I never knew. The comment was so real. I never had to check a gravatar or IP before. I do now with an anonymous or mystery man or strange name or odd wording !! Brutal here I come !! Thanks AC.

Yes thanks RJ. Akismet now have them all. This morning I went back through my almost 10,000 old comments and found 3 more probes which were so topical to the posts and spammed. I was not sure of cell phone comments so they were trashed as well. I wish I knew what to look for from the very beginning and I would have been pre-warned. A picture example would help in spam support. Have a great weekend. Ralph

@rootjosh – I have not looked at whatever is here about spam comments for a while, would it be possible to either add a bit with a few examples of what to look for as well as spammer tactics? Either in existing documents or a new page to help people here.
Would have maybe helped the OP a bit, also if the careful about spam page was linked from the fancy new starting page / section.
