Twenty Seventeen theme; header video

  1. I am trying to use a header video to cover the full width of my page. I added the youtube link, and there is a black and a white vertical bar on the right side of the video. The video is not even visible at all when you view on a mobile device. Any suggestions?

The blog I need help with is tayloralexandraweddings.wordpress.com.

  2. Hi emandtay,

The theme is mobile responsive, the reason the video is not playing quickly in mobile device is because the absolute maximum file size you can upload is 8MB for video header.

Can you please check how much is the file size at YouTube.

For the Header Video, you can link to any video hosted on YouTube. If you have a Premium or Business Plan(VideoPress support), you also have the option to upload your own video in .mp4 format. Smaller file sizes will help make sure your site is loaded quickly, so try to optimize your file to reduce its size as much as possible.

If you're looking for more information please read the overview of the theme on this page https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen

    Best Wishes

  3. Hey there @emandtay and @vishalmukadam,

Please accept my apologies for jumping in on this! I spent a while looking up video things :)

When setting a Youtube video to the header it will show a black bar on both sides of the video; the black bars are something that is programmed from Youtube, so it is actually covering the full width of the page.

there is a black and a white vertical bar on the right side of the video

Are you referring to the Action Bar? That is the small white bar that expands and contracts on the bottom right of the browser window as seen in this screenshot. If that is the case here are some threads that go over that item:

Thread for the bar at the bottom on mobile devices (different than Action bar) in case you are curious about that:

If you are not referring to the Action bar please let us know by sending a screenshot of what you are seeing for clarification :)

The video is not even visible at all when you view on a mobile device.

All of the WordPress.com themes with video backgrounds will display the thumbnail or filler images on mobile devices. The post at this thread has a response regarding this:

I am seeing the thumbnail on your site when looking at it in mobile devices so it appears to be working as intended.

If you have any other questions please let us know! Good luck on the site, it does look like it is coming along nicely :)

  4. Hi @nixiack8,

    Thanks for correcting me.

  5. @vishalmukadam,

No worries! It took me almost 30 minutes to find that thread :/ Please feel free to bookmark it (I sure did) if / when this question comes up again.

    Cheers!

  6. Thanks so much @nixiack8

    Good Luck and Best Wishes.

  7. Thanks you guys!

I don't think I'm explaining the issue correctly. Here's a screen shot of what I'm talking about. There is a vertical bar on the far right that is white that has a play/pause button. I don't want the bar or play/pause button, I just want the video to go all the way across the screen. (Also I've never sent a screen shot on here before so forgive me if this link doesn't work lol)

  8. WAIT. I just looked at it on someone else computer and the white bar isn't there so I guess that's just on the editors end.
I am, however, having this issue:

When setting a Youtube video to the header it will show a black bar on both sides of the video; the black bars are something that is programmed from Youtube, so it is actually covering the full width of the page.

Is there no way to get rid of the black bars? It didn't have that in the graphics on the page where you pick out the theme. Perhaps I have to upgrade my account to get rid of it? I wonder if you upload the mp4 with the upgraded account if it still does the bars.

  9. Thank you for that screenshot!

I just looked at it on someone else computer and the white bar isn't there so I guess that's just on the editors end.

Last night I had tested this on my own site with a random set of videos and I never saw the white bar on the right, just the black bars on either side. Since the white bar appears to only show on your computer it could be a browser extension or something causing it. The browser appears to be Safari, please correct me if I am mistaken :) If you want to take a stab at it you can troubleshoot Safari extensions and plugins following this Apple KB article.

Is there no way to get rid of the black bars?

I tested around with several Youtube videos just now and I either got the black bars on the sides or across the top/bottom, it depended on what ratio the video was loaded to Youtube with (4:3 or 16:9).

    Digging into this further
I found this thread from the Youtube forums explaining the bars in embeds a bug on Youtube. The good news is that it is fixable if you are embedding videos onto a page, the bad news is that if it is just a link from Youtube (such as what is required with the TwentySeventeen header) there are no controls to be able to take those out :(

The alternative is to upgrade your account to the Premium or Business plans. This comes with VideoPress which by all accounts should be able to do what you need. The TwentySeventeen documentation goes over the settings for that as well.

Let us know if you run into something or have other questions.

    Happy WordPressing! :)

  10. Thank you!!

  11. Sure thing :)
