I am very upset that all of a sudden unacceptable borderline porn ads appearing on our blogs. If this does not stop we will be moving our blog posts from WordPress indefinitely.

Those ads are not put on your blog by WordPress.com. Those ads were put there by your own browser, because you have enabled an add-on that does some function while ALSO putting porn ads all over your site.

To remove the ads, disable all your add-ons one by one until the ads vanish. That’s how you know which one is responsible. Delete it entirely.

I see, in fact, no ads at all on your site. Nobody but you can see those ads.

It’d be great if you’d post back here which browser add-on was the cause of this, for future reference.

@tt – I was thinking more along the line of this thread…

Also interested to know which add-on is the culprit. Thanks.

We are on the same page as far as I can tell. I believe raincoaster reminded us what she learned from the text enhance threads that I had forgotten. :)

Hence far we know that http://text-enhance.com and a game program from AARP are culprits. I’m fairly sure there will be others revealed too.

I found two I disabled, Wajam and Shopping Sidekick. I disabled these two and the ads stopped.

It’s also important to note that there is a variety of adware and malware that can do this. Some can only be found with deep security scanners.

You issue is a different one completely from what’s being reported in this thread. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all.

The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements, and the agreement for this has been in our terms of service since 2006.

We try hard to only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

However, if you are seeing ads that state “ads not by this website” or ads from highlighted words in your posts, these are not from us and typically added by an infected or corrupt browser add-on or extension. If that is the case, I recommend deactivating your browser’s add-ons or extensions individually until you find the cause. You should find instructions for this in your browser’s support documentation.

To be clear, all of our ads are family-friendly, and several are actually just US television commercials.

@thecambridgechamber, thanks for coming back and giving us the names of the browser add-ons that were giving you grief.

Hi, sorry about not coming back right away. Its been like now you see it and now you dont. I had to try to test it first.
These ads keep changing. Once I am signed out I see on my blog Sliced Tourmalines a video now about organ donations. I own my blog. Its not free. Zeejewelry.me.
I am so confused. Sometimes they are there…like now and sometimes not.
They are not on every blog. Sliced tourmalines seems to always have this now.
I dont know how to deactivate browsers add-ons or extensions.
    Sorry again,
    Allie

Hi, I see it’s a youtube video on my blog. This is not a video that belongs to me about organ donations.
I cleared the cookies and all that. It’s still there as long as I am not logged in yet.
Do I need to purchase the no ad upgrade?
    ok, Thanks.

Just so I understand this Timethief:
I already purchased my blog annually.
I only see ad when I am not signed in to wordpress.
This youtube video and other ad only started this week.
Why now and how did this get on my blog? Is it a virus?
Purchasing no-ads upgrade, this will take away the video I see when not signed in?
    Thank you in advance.

All blog here at WordPress.com are free blogs that are hosted free of charge.

You purchased a domain mapping upgrade and that’s what you got.

I only see ad when I am not signed in to wordpress.

The video ad is not a virus. It’s an ad placed by WordPress.com on your blog.

Purchasing no-ads upgrade, this will take away the video I see when not signed in?

Yes it will ensure that no other advertising will appear on your blog for one year when the upgrade is due to be renewed.
