Understanding how WordPress blogs work

Hi there, I have tried without luck searching in the forums and I just can’t find an answer. It’s very difficult to get the exact right search words to find what you want.
I have been writing my blog for several months now and it continues to appear as though the only viewers who can like and comment are other wordpress bloggers. This baffles me but friends have repeatedly said that when they press like they are asked to sign up with email and this is bad news for a public blog, so is that just how it works or have I got a setting wrong? I am getting lots of likes and views on my social media pages but I want people who go to my blog to be able to do more than read it. So can you please explain to me how this works and what I can do or whether that is just how it works? Thank you for you help! Regards AnabelleThe blog I need help with is skandihygge.wordpress.com.

Hi there, if you are referring to WordPress “Likes” then that is correct.
“Likes” is a feature available only to logged in WordPressdotcom users. When someone “likes” a post, their Gravatar appears next to it, thus the reason for needing to sign up for an account. There are no anonymous “likes”.
I have the same issue except that I am new to WordPress. Is there a way to get likes on a page from outside of WordPress?
@photogp80 If you mean on a site using the standalone WP software, you can use jetpack plugin, but again, anyone who wants to Like a post will need to have a WordPressdotcom/Gravatar account to be able to do so.
