Understanding Site Stats

  • Understanding site stats.

I am a little confused as to exactly what some of the site stats mean. Any help from you nice people would be appreciated.

I don’t fully understand this part. What is this wordpress tips to make your theme even better and why do so many views come from there?

Does tag surfer mean people used tag surfer and found my blog from using it?

Why would I have a view from mail yahoo?

Total views referred by search engines 25

That seems pretty straight forward I guess. That means 25 people found me by using a search engine?

This one is a little confusing to me. If only 25 people found my blog using a search engine why do I have so many views on these news items I posted? How did they find the news stories if they didn’t use a search engine? I guess “home page” means those 7 viewers found my whole page? I guess the other views mean people found those specific news items I posted somehow? I am trying to figure out what generates the traffic, how they find me, and where they come from, but I don’t fully understand how to do that.

How come I only have 5 clicks on the blog site since I also have 68 visitors?

Any other advice on how to analyze traffic is appreciated.

  • I don’t fully understand this part. What is this wordpress tips to make your theme even better and why do so many views come from there?

Referrers are people who link to you. Unfortunately, referrer logs are subject to spam (like comment spam) which is what that first one was. We do our best to filter them out, but please contact us via http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ if you find any more.

I have already reported the one you listed.

Does tag surfer mean people used tag surfer and found my blog from using it?

Yep, that’s from people using our Tag Surfer feature.

Why would I have a view from mail yahoo?

Your blog probably has an email subscriber with a Yahoo email address.

That means 25 people found me by using a search engine?

    Yes, that is correct.

If only 25 people found my blog using a search engine why do I have so many views on these news items I posted? How did they find the news stories if they didn’t use a search engine?

They probably found your blog via other means. Directly entered the URL, subscribe via email or an RSS reader, etc.

I guess “home page” means those 7 viewers found my whole page?

    Yes, that is correct.

I guess the other views mean people found those specific news items I posted somehow?

Either they found the posts specifically, or they clicked through from the home page.

How come I only have 5 clicks on the blog site since I also have 68 visitors?

Clicks = outgoing clicks. So, 5 visitors clicked on links to be taken elsewhere.

Please let us know if you have any more questions!

  • Thank you Mr. Happiness engineer!

How can I see who all links to my page? And when you say “links” to my page does that mean they found my blog and posted one of my items on their site, and on their site they posted a link back to my site?

How can I see who has suscribed to my blog? Is there a way I can see their mail addresses?

  • How can I see who all links to my page?

Basically, everyone under your list of referrers (with the exception of the spam ones) has a link to your site.

And when you say “links” to my page does that mean they found my blog and posted one of my items on their site, and on their site they posted a link back to my site?

    Exactly.

How can I see who has suscribed to my blog? Is there a way I can see their mail addresses?

You can see these from the Subscriptions tab in the General box on your Site Stats page.

  • I have no suscribers so I can’t figure out where that mail yahoo referrer came from. Its a mystery.

Ok I checked out the link to my page you said was spam and it went here. [spam referrer removed]

Every time I refresh that page it serves up a different ad. An ad for zumba dvd’s, gold coins, amazon, etc….

What does somebody like that get out of linking to me? How did they do it? I don’t see any links to my page on their ads.

I am sorry if I am driving you crazy Mr. Happiness Engineer, but I am trying to learn about internet revenue generation and you are very helpful.

  • i also have this link:
    [spam referrer removed]
    whats this all about?
    thanks

  • slowsimpleconscious, that’s referrer spam.

As mentioned above, please contact us via http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ to report it and refrain from posting them on the forums. They don’t need any more free publicity.

I have already passed along the one you listed, so there’s no need to report it this time.

  • stretchingminds, they do that because they want you to do exactly what you did.

Every time you view their page, they make money off of their ads.

They leave the false referrer by spoofing it in their browser.

Also, please refrain from posting links to them on the forums. They don’t need any more free publicity.

  • Ok Mr. Happiness Engineer. Gotcha. I read more about it too and I understand it better now. Thank you so much for your kind help.

  • I have gotten 800 hits in the last 10 hours by a randomized search engine on my stat page. Can I block this?

  • Do not click the links.
Do not post any information here please.

  • How can we tell in advance that it is a referrer spam without clicking on it? The last one I tried looked very much legitimate until I clicked and the url instantly changed in the address window. Could it possibly be determined by the number of hits being extraordinary? Or should we report and let y’all decide? And if it was legit, would you return that info to us?

I get at least one of these, daily. Do you really want to know about each one, or should I just tell you to check mine a lot, or what?

  • It’s just experience that teaches you to recognize them. Yes, let them know each one.
