"Unknown" search engine terms – why?

  • I would like to know why this is on the Site Stats page… how is this telling me anything useful or insightful? It isn’t, actually… I would like to know what kind of (sometimes off-the-wall) searches lead to my blog, so I can gain insights as to how to make it more visible to search engines. That somebody searched using a term that is hidden to protect ‘privacy’ (why, pray tell?) is of no use to me, so don’t bother showing it. FWIW…

  • I use my Google webmasters account for gaining insights into which search terms brought clicks into my blogs.

    In October Google decided they wanted to encrypt search sessions of anybody signed in to Google.com. Apparently this was for privacy reasons … cough! In practice, this means that Google stopped passing the organic keywords that referred traffic to websites whenever users are logged in Google and conducting searches.     FWIW Google makes about between 700 – 900 changes every year that we detect. Who knows what will happen next? Perhaps they will listen to the flack that’s been flying since October and change back again.
