Upgrading from .wordpress.com site to unique domain name later?

  • I would like to make a website to help people learn reading the Khmer language; Translations of folk tales and news clippings etc. into English at an intermediate to advanced level.

As I am new to wordpresscom and blogging, I would like to have a .wordpress.com site to begin with (so as to build up content, and get use to creating and designing a website)…..Will I be able in 6 or so months to upgrade to a unique domain name and move everything over to that site? when I have built up content and learnt how to use wordpress.com?

One other question whilst I am here: is it possible on wordpress to be able to hover the mouse over a word and for a definition to appear in text next to the cursor? That would be really helpful in deciphering an unknown Khmer word.

Thank you for any and all replies. I’m looking forward to creating a wordpress.com site

  • Hi lukecoffeecafe,

I’ll try to answer both questions for you.

For the domain name, you can certainly start out using the WordPress.com domain name you have registered. At any point you can register a custom domain name and map it to the site you’ve created here on WordPress.com. The site would remain exactly the same except that you can set the primary domain name to be the one you registered.

You can find more info about it here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

For the mouse over hover you could try some html code like this for words that you want to have a definition to appear.

    <abbr title="This will popup">Word/phrase you want definition for</abbr>

What ever you put in the title will appear when you hover over the word or phrase. I’m not sure the abbr tag is the most semantic for this but it should work for you.

In order to add that code you would need to enter the Text version of the Editor instead of the Visual. See more about the editors here http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/

Let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions.

  • Thank you sandymcfadden.

I’ll sign up for a .wordpress.com domain and get started.

The pop-up sounds a bit complicated, but at least possible. Think I’ll start out basic and work my up. When I have this skill and other essential skills mastered I’ll pay for a unique domain name.

    Many thanks for your advice
