I would like to purchase the domain name upgrade, to drop the wordpress from the name. Unfortunetly I have already sent the link with the “wordpress” in it to a bunch of people.
If I get rid of the “wordpress”, will links with the wordpress in it, still function the same way?The blog I need help with is mcscriptor.wordpress.com.

yes –
There are two steps you need to do
1) register the domain name
2) Map the domain name2.5) Wait for the changes to move across the internet – changes start in a few hours but can take 24 to 72 hours to fully migrate

Good morning :)@mcscripturus
Here’s how to proceed. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
(1) See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
(2) See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
(3) See here for mapping a sub-domain (for a domain with an existing website) to your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
Would it work through search engines? Say if one was to Google, mcscriptor.wordpress.com instead of mcscriptor.(insert here), would it still work?
yes the name works with search engines, the base URL mcscriptor.wordpress.com will redirect properly to your-cool-name.com, with the proper Post / Page URL
Over a period of time search engines will stop indexing the URL mcscriptor.wordpress.com and the URL in the search engine will show up as your-cool-name.com,
Either way, links will go to the proper address
Alright Thanks!
