Use my own domain and host

    Hello

I already have a website, with a paid domain and host.

I want to re design my website using WordPress.
I am fairly common with WordPress and how it works, but something has got me puzzled.

When I saw how to change the site address, it still said I need to pay WordPress’s host and mapping?

I don’t want to “kill” my current website. I want to design it on the side, say http://www.example.wordpress.com and then change the domain to my domain.

Could anyone give me the best solution for this, since reading that on the docs got me confused?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

When I saw how to change the site address, it still said I need to pay WordPress’s host and mapping?

“WordPress” is not a host, nor is it a company, so you can’t pay it anything. WordPress is just the software, and if you want to use WordPress on your current hosting, you need to ask your host for help installing that software on your server with them.

Provided your hosting plan allows for multiple sites, you should be able to create a new site using the WordPress software on a subdomain of your current domain without it affecting your current site.

Support for the WordPress software can be found at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Currently you are posting in the support forums for WordPress.com, a hosting provider for our own custom version of the WordPress software. If you build a new site with us, we will be the host for that site, and to use your domain with a site hosted on our servers require one of our paid plans.

If this is what you want to do, you don’t need to change the domain to us immediately. In that case, go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ to create a new site in your account, and select the free address option on the domains step. You can leave switching the domain over to us until you’re ready to do that.

    Hi,

Thank you for your quick response.

Some things were clarified, others still left me a bit confused.

I intend to do it on WordPress.com so I can quickly start it and manage it.

    If I do this:

If this is what you want to do, you don’t need to change the domain to us immediately. In that case, go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ to create a new site in your account, and select the free address option on the domains step. You can leave switching the domain over to us until you’re ready to do that.

Do I still need to pay anything? (On WordPress.com)
Even though I pay for my own domain and hosting…

That quotation is explaining that you can get started on a free site. So you don’t have to pay anything at this time if you don’t want to. The site can get built on a free address that we give you and then you can connect the domain once you’re ready to go live with it.

When connecting a custom domain you will be required to have the personal plan or higher. https://wordpress.com/plans/ That plan includes your hosting, your domain, and your access to our support team.

You will no longer need separate hosting once you connect the domain to WordPress.com because we handle that. It’s a managed hosting environment, so we take care of the behind the scenes details that will help you have a successful site. Things like back ups, security, SEO…

    I see, I understand.

    Quick question then:

My website is hosted with SIteground
They provide a WP Install feature.

If I use that method, I don’t have any extras to pay, correct?

Following this, how could I use this feature without making my website down?
I know, if I click to install it, it’ll override my website, but I would like to connect it to my domain after it’s built, but since if I do it via WordPress I get charged, this just confused me quite a bit

    Thanks

That’s not entirely something we can answer, because we aren’t affiliate with Siteground. You’ll need to look over your account terms with them.

Overall, on Siteground, you’re using the WordPress.org software, and to clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

So, what you use on Siteground, and what you could get if you moved to WordPress.com are two entirely separate things.
