Hi, I’m very new to WordPress. As I’ve been looking all over for answers to a few specific questions that I have to improve my blog, I realized that I may be missing some very key concepts about WordPress in general.

Could someone answer my questions? I’m extremely confused, and a bit… frustrated

The idea of “installing WordPress.” I don’t recall installing anything to login to wordpress.com with my account. Why is there so much talk about installing it?

Plugins. Tutorials say that I need to download a plugin and then put a php file into the Plugins sidebar in my Dashboard, but I see none! Where is the sidebar?

Editing my Theme. I know the WordPress is very good for editing the program of a theme, but I can’t for the life of me find a way to get to editing it on my Dashboard. Where can I do this?

The blog I need help with is mythoughtsphere.wordpress.com.

All those references are to the standalone version of the WordPress software.

You can learn more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress here

You are on wordpress.com where all the hard work for you. As you say you jst login to worpress.com and away you go.

The source of your confusion is that you have been reading instructions for wordpress.org, which allows people to download WordPress software, install it on a site and have full control – they can even change the program to make it do new things. This is much more complicated and you have to pay for your hosting.

This article explains the differences: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

To learn about WordPress.COM, go through this: http://learn.wordpress.com

WP.ORG works almost the same way, but you are responsible for all your own tech support, updates, theme tweaks, and security.
