Visual editor – spaces changing to NBSP

  • I use Opera 9. I have noticed that I can use the Visual editor for a short while, but then it uses non-breaking spaces instead of regular ones. I have to switch to the Code tab and retype everything. On the Code tab, they don’t actually show up as the NBSP tag, but that’s apparently what they are because the sentence will disappear off the edge on my blog if it was composed under Visual.

As long as I stick to the Code tab and never use Visual, my spaces stay as spaces. But, just a short visit to the Visual tab will cause new spaces to be non-breaking.

Do any of you know what would cause this behavior?

  • I use the visual rich text editor (Tiny MCE) and it supplies the   that I do not want. I then go to -> Users -> Your Profile and uncheck the “use the visual rich text editor” box and click “Update Profile” to turn the persnickety thing off. Then I edit the post in the standard editor and delete the unrequired and undesired spaces.

  • I remember this being reported before as I remember testing it and thinking how bizarre it was.

Only work arounds that I know of are the one you’ve discovered, using a different browser (Firefox always seems to play nice) and writing in an offline blog client or text editor.

  • Gah! Offline clients won’t work because wordpress.com strips out a lot of formatting (mostly the “style” tags – which is nuts because “font” is deprecated). I don’t want to get rid of Visual because it has some options that aren’t available in Code. It also gives me a quick preview of what my post looks like.

  • Clarification: I meant the “style” attribute, not tag.

Are you sure that you will be happy here on this wordpress.com multiuser blogging platform? From what I’ve read in your forum posts I believe that hiring a web host and downloading free-standing wordpress.org software may be a better choice for you.

  • LOL. I’m sure I’ll be fine here. It’s not WordPress’ fault that Tiny MCE has an odd bug in it. I realized the same thing happens to me on worsethanfailure.com, but I rarely noticed because I don’t type paragraphs in replies there. I’m working around the quirk. I was just hoping there was a fix.

The “style” problem is minor. It’d be nice to be able to use the attribute and all valid styles within, but it’s not a show-stopper. The RSS issue I mentioned in another thread is a very minor thing. My widget bar has enough going on. I was just experimenting back when I first joined and saw that it wouldn’t work.

Also, I have 2 years of hosting at GoDaddy.com, but it’s on the Windows platform (I develop with Microsoft languages). They don’t run PHP on the Windows plan. I wish they did as there are other things I’d love to install that are PHP, but it’s yet another limitation I have to deal with.

I don’t want to have to pay for more hosting just to gain PHP capabilities, so I’ll deal with what I’ve got. I just post in case someone knows workarounds, etc.

Thanks for responding. I wanted to be sure that you knew that wordpress had another option. I’m glad to hear that you know that.

As far as workarounds go you might want to check out the forum searchbox. I’m thinking that those that are known will be found there.

    Happy blogging. :)
