I have an upgraded account and still get them…

    #3103508

As soon as I posted that I have an upgraded and didn’t get them….
    I got one.
    Figures.

So, both of mine get them.

WP, is there ever going to be a better fix? I appreciate you deleting them before they are actually a follower, but it would be nice if they didn’t get through at all. I would like to add a “I’m not a robot” button for anyone who want to try and follow me. Is this an available plugin?

    #3103553

    I’m having the same problem!!
Are they a threat to me in any way?

    #3103563

Yes, I they keep coming but at least don’t now get listed on the Blogs as
followers. Despite assurances from WordPress, I continue to worry about the the implications and consequences of these spam followers.

I’m getting these every day again, it’s annoying and worrying.

I’m getting them too. Nice to know I’m not alone.

Do not worry about these. I know that they are annoying, but that’s all, it’s not a security risk.

Just an FYI that I am also noticing this. I run three different blogs and it’s only a problem on one of them, but it’s still weird and rather creepy.

    #3103854

I see this is a problem that’s being looked into, and that’s great! My thanks to all the hardworking people trying to fix the issue.

    That said . . .

How do I know when it’s been solved? Or how to solve it, if it involves any action on my part? Follow this thread? Or will you send out a general announcement to everyone?

Glad to find this “Weird Followers” conversation because I’ve been too busy until now to follow up on why the heck I’ve been getting them for months…even as of 5 minutes ago! I paid on every level I can think of to upgrade security so now I’m in the delete mode! I’m going onto my Very Proprietary WordPress site and probably spend way too much time trying to figure out how to get them gone! I hope it’s as simple as one of the WP techs indicated to do. Thanks!

It’s getting worse and tedious to sift through email and then go to each blog site to see if they’re actually there, delete if they are. Come on, WordPress…do something!

    #3103962

I have gotten these notifications two or three times a day for the past week or so.
Now it’s jumped up to four in the past hour. I understand that there’s not really another solution to this problem besides what’s already said, but it’s starting to get kind of annoying bc I do want real accounts to be able to follow me by email.

artandtulips – It’s not that simple. We are actively working on this. The best work around for you is going to be setting up a filter in your actual email for these followers emails. This will prevent them from reaching your inbox, saving you some aggravation.

    #3104045

katherinemoly – Try setting up an email filter as I mentioned above.

I have had exactly the same happen over the last few weeks. I receive an email saying they are following me but I do not see them on my email followers page on the blog. Should I then just leave it?
    Thanks

    Hi popcornandprayers,

Should I then just leave it?

Yes, there is nothing you need to do as our developers are already working to remove these spam followers. If they don’t appear in your followers list, it means they have already been removed.

Recently I have started receiving email followers with very long names from outlook.com like (email redacted)
    (email redacted)
    (email redacted)
    (email redacted) .
As I am typing this in forum I have received one more similar notification with a weird email address. It is very irritating. Although , Developers staff is working on this as I understand from the thread , it is taking too long to tame such spam e-mailers.
Please advise how can one get rid of these messages in my Inbox without affecting the genuine followers.
    thanks
    regards

    @wdtom, as @lizkarkoski suggested above:

The best work around for you is going to be setting up a filter in your actual email for these followers emails. This will prevent them from reaching your inbox, saving you some aggravation.

    Else, you can:
    1. Go to https://wordpress.com/me/notifications page
    2. Click “V” sign to the right of your site name
    3. Uncheck the box for “Site follows” notifications (for the time being)
    4. Click “Save Settings” button

I’ve had this happen in the past and have had three more in the past couple of days…

When I look in the area to remove them, they aren’t there…

Does this mean that WordPress has solved half the problem—i.e., they remove the follow but can’t stop the email notification?

I would advise against trying to remove individual followers. Usually we try to catch them and get them out of there but sometimes that happens after the initial notification is sent. Other times they are following and quickly unfollowing on their own.

We’ve tried a few things to stop these spammers; they’re persistent. But so are we.

For now, consider the steps above to remove the email notifications. You’ll still get notifications via the WordPress.com notification “bell” if you allow that. Those should disappear automatically if the user unfollows (or was forcibly removed for spamming.)
