What will happen if WordPress removes www from the domain name?

  1. If WordPress removes www from my domain name, will people still be able to find it if they DO type in www? We are looking to change it from to ( is already taken)

The blog I need help with is

  2. All links with "www" are directed to the same URL without the "www".

  3. Thank you - had me worried there for a moment!

  4. Actually just a clarification;
    1. We register this as
    2. WordPress changes this to
    3. We can tell people our url is
    4. will still be directed to

    is that right?

  5. Timethief - yes I did read that section which is why I had the question as it seemed to just be a one line statement. Did i miss a further explanation?

  6. I flagged this thread so your get a definitive answer form Staff. Please do not purchase the domain with the "www" until they respond to you.

  7. Thanks Timethief.

  8. You're welcome and thanks for overlooking my silly typos above. :(

  9. We actually strip out the www. for your convenience, and anyone visiting the www. version of your domain will be automatically redirected to the non-www version.

www is an old protocol from back when everything was under separate server hardware. www ( was the web server, mail ( was the mail server, ftp ( was the FTP server, print ( was the print server, etc.

These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.

  10. Thank you! Good to know.

  11. You're welcome!

  12. Bookmarked ... because you said that so well lol :D

  13. Thanks! :)
