The New Sharing Options Thread

I love the changes, but like most of the things here on WordPress.com, it would be nice to receive a heads up…instead of just finding out when you go to put up a new post. For example, when you cut Cutline, but didn’t let anybody know and just switched to Coraline. I love Coraline, just like I love this new way to share, but would have liked more of a heads up. Not everyone visits here to be notified of the changes. I was using Getsociallive before this as suggested by one of the moderators, but now don’t have to cut and paste more code to get sharing buttons. Thanks for the great addition. Keep up the good work, but let us know when you are doing the good work and what you’re doing.

If you’d like to know when we add a feature or when we have news to share, it’s a great idea to subscribe either by RSS or by email to the WordPress.com news blog at http://en.blog.wordpress.com/. When we make changes, they are normally announced there.

    Hello Markel,

I’d like to add the “share” options in the emails that go out to my subscribers. Is this possible yet?

I hope this is the right place to ask this question. By the way I blog in French.

    Hi guys

Well, this new “share” function is very useful.

I have added also a MySpace button share, if someone is interested here is the url that I have added:

    http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=postto&t=%post_title%&c=%post_title%&u=%post_url%

I would like to ask, if it’s possible, since there is the facebook share button with the counter “above” it, can you put this counter “inline” with the button?

    Thanks in advances

Thanks for the sharing, I have a problem though. There is a huge gap between the sharing and the comments on my post pages. I am assuming that is something to do with my custom css, do you know what I need to adjust to reduce the gap? I did try the main index page option but this has an even bigger gap between post 1 and 2 then strangely all the other posts are perfect.

The counters that are used for the “smart” buttons rely on JavaScript buttons that are provided by the sharing services themselves, so custom services that are added can’t have counters.

    Not at this time.

    Hi markel

    Thanks for your replay.

Well, honestly I don’t understand something. I mean, I’m using the “smart” FB button on my blog, and I see the counter box above it, so there is the counter.

I misunderstood and thought you were talking about the MySpace button you were adding. I’ll ask about this.

    :-)

Oh yes now you are right, very good.

I hope that it should be not so difficult, I think that it’s enough that they change, in the script, type=”box_count” with type=”button_count”

And of course thank you very much in advances

There seems to be a slight problem with the facebook button. When I set it to default or share the spacing between all the buttons is normal but when I set it to Like no matter where it is placed there is always an additional space to the right of it and it makes the bar look a bit funny.

I also have a suggestion. Is it possible if you could allow us to change the ‘+ Share’ buttons name.

Something like ‘+ More’ would be a good option to have.

Is it my imagination, or did these used to display on the main page of the blog and now they only display on the individual post pages? Since I put the entire blog posts on the front page, I may have to go back to using GetSocial if they don’t appear on the front page.

We have to leave space for the count to appear once the first Like is placed on your article. You’ll see how it works if you look at an article that’s been Liked already.

One thing you can do to mitigate this is to place the Facebook button at the right of your share icons (if they appear in a single line).

“Share” is something that’s descriptive and works both if you have all of the services hidden behind the button and only some of the services hidden behind the button.

    Your suggestion is noted.

You have the buttons configured in Settings > Sharing to display on posts only, rather than posts + index pages.

This is further to my post on Aug 26… The share buttons are not being correctly displayed on the index page of my posts that are of the gallery category. They do display correctly once one is taking to the individual post page. Has any cause and/or solution been found for this.

    Thanks

    HI Markel,
I love the new sharing options. Infact i started using them right form day 1. My recent problem is…that the tweet smart button, is not showing the number of times the post has been tweeted. Or rather it takes more than a day to refresh. When infact, my posts usually get tweeted atleast 12-13 times….the count is still showing just 6 or 0. Is there something wrong? Should I change some settings?

    Hi markel

Is there any news about putting “inline” the counter in Facebook “smart” share button?

Believe me, it’s not so nice to see this “FB counter box” out from the line of all share buttons.

I know that there is the “FB like button” with the counter inline, but please, I would like to get the other button too.

    Thanks again

The theme is actually behaving as designed, where the post content for Gallery posts is “pushed” to the right to make way for the lead-in image for the post. I have asked if this is something that can be changed.

The count that’s provided for the Twitter smart button is actually provided for us directly by Twitter. If you click on the count, you’ll see that it opens up a Twitter search for your post URL.

There’s nothing that can be changed or altered regarding the count.

Is there any news about putting “inline” the counter in Facebook “smart” share button?

We haven’t even had a chance to talk about it. Patience. :)

We’ve removed the count from the Share button, so it won’t mess up the layout of the buttons now. Facebook is actually encouraging people not to use the Share button anymore and instead to use the Like button, so the count’s been removed to maximize compatibility going forward.

i didn’t find any sharing options to enable or disable it in the post editor for pages? is it normal? whats the procedure if i want to disable the sharing option for a specific page??

You can now enable/disable Sharing buttons on pages.

    great!
easy to use and just about enough…

the big question is of course: When do we get this in the WP-download?

    WP 3.0.2 ??

    would be sooo easy.

It will be released as a plugin for use with self-hosted WordPress.
