Why are WordPress blogs so limited in embed options ?

  1. Hi everyone,

Thousands of websites use embending options and offer them to their users to of course draw traffic to their sites (auto advertising) but they are most of the time very useful.

For exemple, DeviantART (the art website) where people can submit their art (be it photos, drawings, paintings, sketches, anything) let people use a embeding code to show off their stuff on any site/blog. Clicking the embended image takes you to the original piece on DeviantART, and then you can acess the gallery of the artist etc, and therefore see all his stuff. All this is FREE and only for DeviantART.
But other websites give similar options to create a "interconnected web", that is more easy to use for the average user, therefore reaching more public. So I think it's important we get the possibility to use those embending codes.

Of course they can be dangerous for WordPress but I'm sure they can find a way to control the risk.

Please WordPress let us use it !!

  2. According to staff, javascript, iframes, forms and flash could create security problems and since this is a multiuser blogging platform, a non-secure embed on one blog could effect others as well.

  3. Basically, if one person introduces a security risk, that risk is shared by everyone else using that theme. Naturally, nobody wants that; you'd be at the mercy of the dumbest, most gullible person using that theme, even provided no malicious people did this deliberately.

If you want more embed formats, you will basically have to go to a blogging platform that doesn't share the guts of its blogs, meaning self-hosted WP or another service like Typepad, etc.

  4. is this code not authorized?

    <object width="450" height="363"><param name="movie" value="" /><param name="flashvars" value="id=71379371&width=1337" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" flashvars="id=71379371&width=1337" height="363" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed></object>
Dark Futuristic City by ~SmashR on deviantART

  5. No. Embed codes are not authorized except the ones on the list in the FAQs. The way to tell is to make a blog post with the code in it; if it doesn't work, it's probably because that code is not authorized.

  6. rockwow, you need to be nagging deviantART, so that they provided with a so called 'fauxML' plugin or/and better yet make some sort of the agreement/deal/whatever with the Automattic Inc. (through its manager Tony).

Mark, since this is already kind a very FAQ here indeed, and it relates to all the other popular slideshow/video services (Picasa etc) that are not allowed here because of Flash, will you please make a relevant entry in the FAQ blog, which would send posters requesting flash embeds in the right direction (i.e. to their services marketing dept. or Tony directly)?

I notice that you post lots to the forum so maybe you need some help. Have you found the FAQs yet? Here's the link
The FAQs has a searchbox that you can use and there is also a searchbox here in the forum that you can use too. ;-)

  9. Thanks for your help !

I know I've been spamming the forums lately :(. Sorry.
I try more and more to check the FAQ before asking but sometimes I just don't find what I'm looking for :(

  10. you do not need to sorry, rockwow. I don't think your postings in the forums is spamming.

let alone the FAQ thread referenced above does not answer at all your particular question on displaying a DeviantArt slideshow in your blog.

  11. thistimethisspace

    From the FAQs
    slideshow -
    x-shockwave-flash -

Specific questions like why can't I embed "Deviantart slideshows" or any other site's slideshows must be directed to staff. Volunteers answering forum questions have no answer other than those we can locate in the FAQs and forum searchbox. And, if you intend to propose added features then it's staff that make these decisions and not fellow bloggers.

Support hours are Monday-Friday 8AM - $PM Pacific time and you can use your support button located on the right hand corner of any dashboard side blog page to address staff on this issue.

Darn! the time above should read 8 AM - 4 PM

  13. you can always use the "Post To WordPress" button for Firefox...

I use it to all kinds of flash! But i only can put the code they create on the main blog and the pages, i can't use it on the sidebar...

  14. mvreisjr, can you post via VP the particular piece of the DA gallery (embedded flash) the OP (rockwow) quoted in the beginning of this thread?

and once again, 'Specific questions like why can't I embed "Deviantart slideshows" or any other site's slideshows' directed to staff -- are *futile*.
