Why can't I 'Like' anyone's posts?

  1. When I click the 'Like' button, a blank screen comes up and, if I close it, my 'Likeing' of the post isn't recorded. But if I leave it, nothing happens!

The blog I need help with is

  2. mayyoursoulstir

I'm also having problems with "like" buttons. They are not loading properly to be utilized. I have noticed this for most of the week.
    My blog is

  3. This has been a problem with me for every wordpress blog - for months. It doesn't matter which blog it is. I get the same results as above.

  4. It just worked 10 minutes ago - and now I seem to have the same problem - I tried on blog posts (with the button in the navigation and under the post) and in the reader - when I go to the page the "like" is gone.

Would be great if anyone knows why this happens.

  5. Are you referring only to free hosted blogs?
What are the exact URLs of the site you cannot use the "like" button on please?

  6. Yes, the "like" button.

It was really all the blogs I tried - about 10 different ones.

One of the blogs where it was working 15-20 minutes ago and now it doesn't anymore is this one:

  7. mayyoursoulstir

My problem is random also. On my site, there's one time as normal and a few minutes later, the like button and what likes have made it won't load. I've also experienced with other wordpress particular I had to like via the reader page rather than his post.

  9. Thanks for answering. The blank screen is still coming up and it's on every site I've visited for the last few days. It just says Mozilla Firefox and then has in the address bar. However, I can 'Like' via the reader page (Thanks mayyoursoulstir), but that gets a bit annoying.

  10. Using the reader page doesn't help me. That's the first thing I tried when it happened.

  11. Here it worked at first - and after a while it didn't anymore....
...and it is on the reader page and on the pages of the posts itself.

  12. Hi there bloggers,
Will you all please provide a step by step report in answer to what I post below?

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see >

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache:

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled:

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS:

If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary and also post any error reports you get.

  13. Hello Timethief,

first, thanks for your help and suggestions.

I tried Safari (6.0.4.) and Firefox (20.0) and I believe I have the newest versions.
I already tried disabling plugins and everything - and it still doesn't work.

What I find strange is that it works for a while and then suddenly not anymore.
I also tried closing the browser and starting it again - but that didn't help either...

  14. I already tried disabling plugins and everything - and it still doesn't work.

Free hosted blogs which are the only blogs we provide support for on this support forum do not have FTP access and we bloggers cannot install any plugins into them at all.

The like button is an "in-house" like button for the use of logged in bloggers and for use only on free hosted blogs.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG blogs are separate and have separate logins. You cannot "like" WordPress.ORG blog posts by using the WordPress>COM like button.

  15. Oh, I meant browser plugins...
....I just looked at your previous post and you called them extensions there. Sorry for causing some confusion.

My blog is on - and I was logged in.

  16. Thank you. I'm so glad you clarified that.

  17. Which blog is it that you cannot click the "like" button on please? What is the exact URL?

  18. It really comes in waves - sometimes it works on all Blogs - and then on none.
    This one wasn't working yesterday:
And when I tried again earlier today it was working again...
...and at the moment none is working. I just tried to like an old post of the blog and it wasn't working...

So it really is working or not - and I also don't see a system behind it - that I did anything, like starting a program or something.

  19. Oh, and following a blog or posting a comment works - so it is only the like button that doesn't work from time to time.

I'm having the same issue too, I commented on that the like button in the reader isn't working, especially in the last few weeks. I tried some of your steps above, especially since I use firefox, and not all my likes are sticking.

In fact sometimes the post will turn blue again, but when I click to re-like the count will double or triple (but won't stay orange)

  21. @thereporterandthegirl
You have no blog linked to your username and you failed to post an active link to your blog starting with http:// Please do that now.

@timethief...I did everything you suggested in your 12:23 pm comment. So far I have run into no problem on other's blogs, but when I look at my own I've had mixed results. First time - get a like link rather than a button; the likes are in a single file scrolled position. Second time - looks normal. Third time - looks like the first time. Fourth time - looks normal. Just now - trying to load the like button and never does.

  23. mayyoursoulstir

    @timethief...sorry left this off...I'm using IE9 browser

  24. To reply from another thread. We put a lot more time into our blog than anyone would likely guess, we are quite busy behind the scenes, and it's all for free. Lots of traffic and great comments and awesome human interest stories and experiences are the payoff. I fail to see what's wrong with that. Personally, I have no engraved in stone definition of what blogging is supposed to be all about, it's different for everyone. In the case of toemail, it's people from all around the world sharing a bit of fun, happy and sad stories, good causes, and all kinds of things that often have nothing to do with "toes". And there are two of us doing it which makes it special. I would never have started this type of a mail in blog on my own. :)

  25. We have recently established some rate limits on the ability to Like posts in order to stop an increase in spam Like activity.

The current limit is *very* generous, and most people reading and Liking posts at a normal human rate will never encounter it. If you do Like a post and notice that your Like has not been accepted, please slow down a bit.

I'm sorry, I cannot release specific details on the rate limit, but I can say that a few of you in this thread have been attempting to Like several unrelated posts within minutes of their posting (for example, a picture of a rose, a rant on grocery prices, a recap of an MMA fight, etc. all in the spam of 1 minute), which is something that we frown on here, especially when we're attempting to combat spammers. I'm not directly accusing anyone of being a spam Liker in this thread, but please don't behave like one by rapidly Liking so many unrelated posts.

The rate limit is here to keep spam free and a happy place for bloggers.

  26. Thanks for the clarification. Got to admit though that while we do get the occasional spam comment almost all the likes we get are from legitimate blogs. I also thought there was the ability to turn off the like button for people who do not like receiving them for whatever reason?

  27. There is, but we do need to do something about spam Likers "gaming the system" to, just like we have comment anti-spam features even though bloggers can turn off their blog's comments.

  28. mayyoursoulstir

@macmanx...By virtue of being in this thread, you have vaguely incriminated me with your comment to other potentially guilty parties. In defense of my reputation, just feel the need to's not me! I'm just trying to solve a legitimate problem.

  29. Sorry, I didn't intend to incriminate anyone specifically, but needed some way to point out that some of you are hitting the limit and potentially why, without calling anyone out.

  30. mayyoursoulstir

I can't possibly be hitting a limit. I've liked 2 or 3 posts today...after taking the time to actually read them.
