Why did my post disappear?

I created a lengthy post today and tweeted it out, http://scottandrewhutchins.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/project-renewal-hellhole-on-the-bowery/ ; however, this now takes you to my blog in general. That post appears to have been deleted. It is not in my trash, and I did not delete it. I spent three hours on that post and am quite angry that it is no longer present in any form.

The blog I need help with is scottandrewhutchins.wordpress.com.

That post appears exactly where it should ie. on the front page of your blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page. The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top.

Just is case you aren’t aware of these differences please read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

No it doesn’t. Look at the title of the post in the URL. It takes you to a blog post I wrote later the same day.

That link should take you to a blog I wrote earlier today titled “Project Renewal: Hellhole on the Bowery.” That post has disappeared and been replaced by the subsequent post, “I will PayPal $100 to anyone who can demonstrate that my homelessness is my fault.”

Doing a Google search for that title got me this:

Project Renewal: Hellhole on the Bowery « scottandrewhutchins

Those were the first words of my post. I want to know what happened to it. I DID NOT DELETE THIS POST.

Clicking the link brought me to the “I will PayPal $100 to anyone who can demonstrate that my homelessness is my fault” post.

I tagged this thread for Staff to assist you with your issue.

Is the post visible on your Dashboard under Posts?

Raincoaster, it is not visible on my dashboard, which is one of the reasons I’m complaining.

It’s still findable on Google, but it takes you to a different post:

Please rest assured that no one at WordPress has deliberately modified your post in any way. This looks like a possible database glitch – let me have our developers take a look and I’ll get back to you.

I suggest you copy-paste the original post into a plain-text document in the meantime in case it needs to be recreated.

    I’ll keep you posted.

My wife, for which I am writing this message, experienced this problem a couple of times when posting. This happened since a week or so. Learned from the first posting, she’s copying and pasting her blogs first before she’s publishing it. Sometimes succesful, but more it is not. The whole blog is gone.
Maybe it helps: she’s writing her blogs on her EE laptop, while I later on republish her blog from my desktop computer without a problem.

ton079 – would you please start a new thread for your wife’s issue so I can better help you troubleshoot? Thanks!

scottandrewhutchins – I’m sorry about the odd behaviour of your post – that is most frustrating.

Our developers have taken a look and unfortunately haven’t been able to trace down the source of the technical problem. Is it possible that you had two browser windows or tabs open at the same time? If you wouldn’t mind letting us know if this ever happens again, we’d appreciate it, so we can investigate further.

Thanks for your help, and apologies for the inconvenience.

Thanks. Fortunately, my post was saved in a Google cache and I was able to repost it. Too bad I can’t say the same thing about the lost version of my “Sweeper of Dreams” post, which encountered an error when I submitted it and disappeared when I backed up. Of course, that was the time I forgot to highlight and hit Ctrl-C before I submitted.

I believe I had it open in three browser tabs and closed them all out. I didn’t think that would create a problem with the post already uploaded and the link tweeted out.

This is yet another example of why these things should be typed up off-line and saved locally, then pasted into a post form.

If it disappears for any reason, there is no problem with recovery.

Agreed. Using an offline blog editor like windows live writer or Ecto or creating posts in a plain text editor is definitely safer.
