Why do draft posts disappear?

Last week I wrote up a post for my blog, and saved it as a draft. This morning, while the draft post still exists, all the content I created is gone. The post is blank.

This has happened before- previously, I’ll have a saved draft and then come back to edit. After editing and saving, the newly created content won’t shop up. I have to re-do it multiple times before I can get the new content to “stick” in the post.

This has been incredibly frustrating. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

The blog I need help with is atoptherox.wordpress.com.

There’s a known bug with draft posts in some blogs (don’t blame me, I’m just a volunteer here!) so what most people do who have that problem is save the post as private and publish it, instead of saving it as draft.

Also, if you do save as a draft, save when you’ve typed the first word or character as then the autosave will kick in immediately. (I usually type an ‘x’ and save, then remove the x and type my post).

Have you looked in the Revisions module?

An alternative that is wise, is to compose your posts offline and make sure you’ve saved them on your computer and then copy and paste them into the post editor when ready. That way you will never lose a post.

There are also offline editors you can use with wordpress.com blogs:

I can’t even see a “save draft” on my page.

Why don’t they save automatically anymore?

I’m stupid enough to lose two hard earned posts in the same week.

You may be able to recover an earlier Post Revision. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/ Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post.

If you’re not seeing the Revisions module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right corner of your Admin page) http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ to activate it. Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.

If you cannot locate the post by using the instructions I provided for locating and restoring a post revision, and it’s not in your Trash folder http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/ then you will not be able to recover it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

Wow, I just happened to check in on the forums, had no idea all this was going on, now I am very nervous about my (too many) draft posts. It never occurred to me any of them could disappear. I hope this bug (bugs?) is/are on the way out and won’t infect any more blogs…Thx absurd and TT for all the pointers….
