Why does WordPress ask for my phone number to change my account settings?
“We don’t ask you for personal information unless we truly need it.”
You don’t need my phone number for me to change my username, email address, web address, or Interface Language. Please separate these into two forms as this appears to be a deceptive way to get my personal information.
The blog I need help with is dhinged.wordpress.com.
I don’t post by phone and I don’t use insecure wifi connections. Do you? It’s a security backup measure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/
Also, I absolutely don’t want to get a text message every time I log in and be required to enter a code from that text just to log in. That’s ridiculous! What if I want to change my email address? Now I have to get a text message every time I log in?
This is insanity. No other sites I use require this or make me go through this ridiculous rigamarole. You’re really making me consider never using WordPress again or recommending it to any more clients.
Please clean up this form and split it into two forms so that the phone number requirement is separate and only if I want that extra layer of security. This is pure stupidity at this point.
Are you saying your site is not secure until I give you my phone number?

I assume you’re at https://wordpress.com/settings/
The phone number there is for account recovery. It’s another way to recover your account password if you lose access to the email address on your account. If you have lost your password and choose this option, we’ll send a text with a code to recover your account.
More than likely, you selected a country in the “Mobile Phone Country” drop-down menu, it’s the only thing on that page which triggers the phone number requirement.
We are aware that there is no way to clear the Mobile Phone Country choice. Once you have selected it, there is no way to select nothing, and we are working on that.
You’re more than welcome to put a random phone number there, but as we only use it for account recovery, you might as well enter your real phone number. Don’t worry, we don’t have to personnel, resources, or time to call you. :)
