    Howdy Craig,
You can read all about the bookmarks in Chrome, here: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/188842?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en
With that being said, there is a possibility that we might just decide to bring it back, you can track the issue here: https://github.com/WordPress/press-this/issues/15
Let us know if you need help with anything else.

Thanks for the reply. Suyogya, but it still doesn’t help me fix the problem,. I know about bookmarks in Chrome and how to edit and delete. I don’t have any WordPress blogs in my bookmarks. I spent a whole day yesterday trying to fix the problem (as it applies to ALL my blogs), but still don’t know HOW, so am very disappointed the system was changed without warning.

I am considering not using WordPress until this problem is sorted out as I use the press feature all the time. And I cant recommend it any longer as I do.

    Hi there,
The WordPress bookmarklet was deprecated. Please delete it from your web browser when I try to press to http://www.craigsbooks.wordpress.com (my main site).
That is a message from your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, etc.) that is indicating that your bookmark is no longer valid. The best thing to do is to delete the bookmark, manually visit your site craigsbooks.wordpress.com and then readd the bookmark.
I hope this helps! If you have any other questions we can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help!

    Hello!

what is a bookmarklet? This is ALL I’m trying to fix (from yesterday) , but after numerous emails yesterday I’ve got nowhere

  9. Hi there,

The bookmarklet via wp-admin no longer functions — where you would click on a bookmark in your browser and it would grab stuff off of a site.

However, the editor itself when hitting wp-admin/press-this.php itself will keep working. You can still add a URL to your site similarly to how you did it with the old bookmarklet. To do this, add /wp-admin/press-this.php to the end of your site’s address. For example, to access the Press This feature on your (X) site, go to this address:

    https://yoursite.blog/wp-admin/press-this.php

Paste the URL of the site you wish to press in the box at the top that says “Enter a URL to scan”. It will then pull in the contents as your old Press This button did before.

Also, the new dashboard has a Press This feature you can use. It’s not as robust (you can’t copy text and have it included in the new post) — but it’s workable. You can find it at Settings > Writing.

    Hope this helps. Thanks!

  10. thanks so much, Darnell . First bit of real help and info.
    Will try and absorb.
In the meantime I've received more info from your support that doesn't adress the problem that makes my head spin

Thanks again. Will try and solve

    PPS
Now to learn and practice right-clicking at https://wordpress.com/settings/writing/craigsbooks.wordpress.com
and how to put on bookmarks bar

Press This is a bookmarklet: a little app that runs in your browser and lets you grab bits of the web.

Use Press This to clip text, images and videos from any web page. Then edit and add more straight from Press This before you save or publish it in a post on your site.

Drag-and-drop the following link to your bookmarks bar or right click it and add it to your favorites for a posting shortcut.

    Press This
Thanks again, Darnell and best wishes from the First City to see the light

  13. Thanks! Glad to hear that it worked!

  14. TO PRESS just add wp-admin/press-this.php to your website adress in the browser

Simple, "easy peasy". Thanks so much Darnelle

    "non-techno but "purrsistent" craig

  15. But why would you get rid of a working bookmarklet? The php link is not really a bookmarklet, and it isn't functioning well. The text it copies, does not retain line breaks and such, and we have to open it in a new tab first. That defeats the purpose of a bookmarklet.

It all seems arbitrarily done. Doesn't look fair.

  16. @ismailimail

We did not get rid of it. The WordPress.org community removed the feature from the core WordPress software. As we use that same software on WordPress.com, any change there will also affect WordPress.com.

The Calypso version of the bookmarklet still works, as that is not part of Core WordPress.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/press-this/

  17. The standard Press This is very slow and unreliable for me. Is there anything that can be done about this?

  18. @msb69

What do you mean by the "standard Press This"? Are you referring to the Calypso bookmarklet found at My Site ->Settings or the sharing button? On which site are you using it? And in what way is it unreliable? We need details if we're to investigate a potential issue with the feature.

Clicking the Press This button creates a new post in the My Sites editor in a new browser window, and it should take no longer than it normally does when loading the editor.

  19. 1) The Calypso bookmarklet
    2) It is very slow, sometimes taking over a minute to load
    3) Saving does not always work, usually need 2-3 tries
    4) The title is populated way after the body of the post, if at all
    5) It is much slower than the old bookmarklet
    6) The site is avantmusicnews.wordpress.com

  20. I use Chrome or internet explorer sometimes edge but rarely. The regular WordPress button seems to work for now but it's when I press the more button(+) that says WordPress that it won't work-Why?

  21. @daisymae2017

Did you try doing what darnelldibbles (Staff) said above at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-the-wordpress-bookmarklet-was-deprecated-please-delete-it?replies=22#post-3042237?

Did you also note what kokkieh (Staff) said at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-the-wordpress-bookmarklet-was-deprecated-please-delete-it?replies=22#post-3042576?

The Calypso version of the bookmarklet still works, as that is not part of Core WordPress.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/press-this/

  22. Either I'm not doing doing something right or something is wrong because I've tried both ways and neither work.

  23. I've got the press this in my bookmark now what?

  24. @kokkieh, can you please look into fixing the php solution, so it would detect line breaks all the time?

If there's an alternate solution here for the classic dashboard, it should at least work properly.

  25. @msb69

    2) It is very slow, sometimes taking over a minute to load 3) Saving does not always work, usually need 2-3 tries

It loads within seconds for me, and autosave works instantly. So this points to an issue with either your connection or your browser. Please try resetting your router or modem to reset it. Also please clear your browser cache and cookies and try disabling all extensions to see if that makes any difference.

Note that if the editor in My Sites/Calypso is generally slow to load for you as well, as can happen on weaker internet connections like 3G connections, then I'd expect the editor triggered via the bookmarklet to do the same.

    4) The title is populated way after the body of the post, if at all

This is expected, as the Press This bookmarklet doesn't add a title. The editor does that on autosave if it detects you did not manually add a title yourself. In that case it generates a title from the first few words of highlighted text from the page where you clicked the bookmarklet to use as a title.

  26. @daisymae2017

The regular WordPress button seems to work for now but it's when I press the more button(+) that says WordPress that it won't work-Why?

What button are you referring to exactly? The Press This button in your sharing section in both your sites work for me. I don't see the "more button(+)" that you're referring to.

  27. @ismailimail

The php link is not really a bookmarklet, and it isn't functioning well. The text it copies, does not retain line breaks and such, and we have to open it in a new tab first.

It is not a bookmarklet, no. It's a link to the Press This editor in the dashboard, so yes, you do need to open it in a new tab and manually paste in the URL.

On self-hosted WordPress the bookmarklet is being replaced with a plugin that will be available once WordPress 4.9 is released, but it is unlikely we'll add that plugin's functionality to WordPress.com as we still have the bookmarklet in Calypso.

Regarding the line breaks, if you paste and scan a URL with the Press This editor, the text it quotes is pulled from the meta description set in the head-section of the page's HTML. This is the same meta description that search engines use for previews in search results, for example, and can be controlled on WordPress sites by setting a post or page excerpt.

It's not possible to add any type of styling or formatting to a meta description, as that text is inside an HTML tag, not between tags like a paragraph or a link target text. So the editor is displaying what it's getting from the website there. In the unlikely event a page does not have a meta description set the first few lines of text are used, but again the Press This editor will only pull in the plain text, not any formatting or styling as it doesn't expect that.

I realise this is different from how the bookmarklet functioned, but that's because the bookmarklet was designed to copy in any highlighted text instead of the meta description when clicked. As there's no possible way for the editor to "see" what text you've highlighted in a completely separate browser tab, it's simply cannot function in the same way.

If there's an alternate solution here for the classic dashboard, it should at least work properly.

I wouldn't call the Press This editor an alternate solution. Just the only alternative that's left if you don't want to use the Calypso version.

  28. My connection is quite fast. After clearing the browser cache it has gotten better though it is still flaky. Every so often when the window opens it will not allow me to paste anything into it.

Disabling browser extensions seems not to help.

Overall, this was a great feature with the old bookmarklet, but the user experience is just not good with the Calypso version. It is noticeably slower and unreliable.

It would be nice to have a better version that allowed at least some degree of user customization.

  29. Every so often when the window opens it will not allow me to paste anything into it.

It definitely shouldn't behave that inconsistently. Just to confirm, you do have third party cookies and JavaScript enabled in your browser, correct? If that checks out and it's not a browser extension messing things up I don't know what else to try, though.

Can you also check if it perhaps makes any difference if you use another browser?

It would be nice to have a better version that allowed at least some degree of user customization.

Can you please give me more details what you mean by customization? The Calypso version of the bookmarklet opens a complete Calypso instance in a new pop-up window, so you should be able to do anything there that is possible in that editor, including saving a draft and continuing with it in the WP-Admin editor if you prefer.
