Is it possible to have a page--in this case the first--with nothing in the sidebar? I am still trying to get my mind around the concept of pages, so sorry if this is something self-evident. Is it possible to have some of the widgets on some pages and others elsewhere? Without having to understand code?

Widget-free front page?
Doesn't look like it, I'd have to say.
i'm not totally sure what you're asking for, but if you don't want widgets in your 'home' page, there are themes which do not support widgets or are designed that way, such as ambiru and fauna.
if you're asking for a theme that shows widgets on the home page but not on other pages, there are some themes which do this too, but the one i know is blix that does this.
Posts - by date. Pages - not by date.
You can turn off widgets for the entire blog (pages + posts) by emptying the sidebar, but I don't think that's what you want to do. (There are also themes without sidebars).
Some themes don't show the sidebar on pages -- as sulz' suggested the Blix theme. That may be what you are looking for.
