Window App Showing "undefined failed" Error

    Hi

I was excited when I noticed the new Windows wordpress.com app. I downloaded it and all was going well until I hit this error when logging in.

The request to undefined failed (code ECONNRESET), please check your internet connection and try again.

This error occurred a few seconds after I type in my username/email and password and then click the “Sign In” button. I did notice though that the window kept going to a not responding and then back. Also the login box would fade very unsmooth and then the error would pop up directly under the “Lost your password?”.

I have tried restarting my computer, reinstalling it, disabling firewalls, and making sure I have a good internet connections. I don’t know what else could be the problem.

I am trying this on my Windows 10 laptop.

    Thanks
    Matthew

    Hi, Matthew

We have tested the app on Windows 10 and are unable to reproduce this error. As the error message specifically mentions checking your connection, I think the problem might still be there.

Can you please tell me exactly what type of connection you’re using? Can you try logging in using a different connection, for example wi-fi at a coffee shop or library?

If you’re using an antivirus program, please check its firewall as well. That might still be blocking the connection, ever while your Windows firewall is disabled.

    Hi, Jennifer

The full-time forum team is still deciding how to handle this, but I’ll remind them once they come online.

I have connected to a different network and turned off all my firewalls and I am still getting the same error.

The two networks that I have connected to are completely different. So I don’t think it is the network that is the problem.

When I get home I am going to test if a wired connection works for this. Both networks I have connected to are wireless.

I don’t have Windows 10 myself – the earlier testing was done by a colleague – but I’m wondering if the problem couldn’t perhaps be with App Permissions. According to the Microsoft website you can go to Start ->Settings ->Privacy. If the WordPress app is listed there, make sure that it is allowed network access.

I don’t see the WordPress app in the privacy settings. I played around with the privacy settings but nothing worked.

Thanks for trying that. Let me know if the wired connection also won’t work. Meanwhile I’ll keep digging on this side as well.

I will let you know. I won’t be able to do it until this evening as I am out of the house.
    Thanks for all your help!

Good stable 45 Mbps download, 9 Mbps upload speed wired internet connection with Windows firewalls disabled, and I am still getting the error message and am unable to log into it.

Hmm. I have been able to log out and back in several times without any problems, and haven’t seen any similar reports, so this is really strange.

When you logged in, did you use your username or email address? Please try the other one from the one you usually use.

Can you also check what the version number of your app is? If you click on Help ->About in the app menu you will see it.

I’ve also asked our developers about this, so we’re trying to find out why you can’t connect. One thing they mentioned was if you use a proxy on your computer that might be blocking the app. If you have a proxy, say for work, can you try disabling it/using the default settings on Windows and see if that makes any difference?

Thanks for your patience and your help in troubleshooting this.

From the sounds of the error, it looks like the app can’t connect to our API. Can you try opening the following link in your browser to see if it works?

    https://public-api.wordpress.com/rest/v1/sites/en.blog.wordpress.com/

You should see JSON output that starts with something like {"ID":3584907,"name":"WordPress.com News"...

I’m also presuming you can use the wordpress.com web interface in your browser without any issues?

If that works, there may be a deeper issue within the app itself that’s not letting it communicate with the API.

Once again thanks for your guys help.

When you logged in, did you use your username or email address? Please try the other one from the one you usually use.

I have tried using both multiple times and am still not able to get in.

Can you also check what the version number of your app is? If you click on Help ->About in the app menu you will see it.

    Version 1.1.1

One thing they mentioned was if you use a proxy on your computer that might be blocking the app. If you have a proxy, say for work, can you try disabling it/using the default settings on Windows and see if that makes any difference?

I have never used a proxy on this computer.

Can you try opening the following link in your browser to see if it works?

You should see JSON output that starts with something like
    {“ID”:3584907,”name”:”WordPress.com News”…

I see that exactly. No problems viewing it.

I’m also presuming you can use the wordpress.com web interface in your browser without any issues?

I can use and view my account on wordpress.com. I can login and everything, no problems.

    Hi there,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The app is currently on version 1.1.2, so it could be that your version is the problem.

Can you please try re-downloading the app and installing it again? You shouldn’t need to uninstall the current version.

I updated to 1.1.2, disabled firewalls, and I am still getting the exact same error. I am at a loss of what it could be. Thanks for all your help.

We still haven’t been able to find anything on this side that could be causing the problem. However, we released a new version of the app yesterday. Can you please update it and check if you still have this problem? If you open the app on your computer it should automatically prompt you to update.

I know this must be frustrating, but thank you for your patience while we try to figure this out.

Version 1.2.1 and Windows Firewalls disabled and I am still getting the same error. I even reinstalled the app and it is still happening.
    Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for testing that. I’ll ask our developers to check on this again after the weekend.
