I relatively new to the world of blogging. In fact, I’ve only known about personal web building for about a year. I opened this blog as a way to practice my writing skills and also talk about my career in art. Even though my blog has been up for months, I’ve noticed that it is not visible when I search my name on Google. My other free hosted websites seem to do well without any kind of promotion. Is this not the case with WordPress? Do I need to add metatags and or descriptions to my blog? Would it help to point links back to my site?
The blog I need help with is ralphslatton.wordpress.com.
Have you verified your blog ownership with the big search engine yet or not? I recommend that you do if you haven’t. http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools
Your blog is not indexed by Google.
Your blog is indexed by Bing (1 results).
This is a post I published that contains some factors that may expedite the indexing process. OMG! I can’t find my blog on Google
Setting that aside the best way to generate traffic is by commenting on similar blogs in the same niche as your own and in other blogs of interest to you. The flow of traffic is based on relationships. I think this post will also be helpful http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/07/13/wordpress-com-in-house-blog-promotion/
At the end of the day, if you do not use social media and social networks to promote your blog posts and blog, then you will find building a growing readership is more difficult as the audience you reach will be limited.
Do you put your actual name in your posts?
Not to be a spoil sport but I see a 6 week old blog with only two Posts in it. You really need to make more strange observations, WordPress.com calls up Google each time you make a Post but if you don’t write anything they won’t call.
If you write Google will come.
First off, you guys are great. Thanks for the help.
auxclass- Your comments were very helpful. Yes, I was testing the waters first, but you’re right, I should have put more energy in my blog. You inspired me to write something more exciting. Please check out my latest, “My Mannequins are Moving.”
raincoaster- Do I detect concern in your question? I used to worry about internet privacy, but the concern is now moot. I’m an artist and professor and everytime I exhibit or lecture, it is posted everywhere. You can see a forum thread is a small drop in the cyber bucket to me.
If you search for your name plus wordpress, or your name plus one of the tags you’ve used, you’ll see that your WP blog and its posts are indexed by Google. Searching for your name alone won’t fetch your blog on the first page, since you have very few posts (as auxclass pointed out) and since your name figures in various more established webpages.
Links from other sites are more helpful than links to your own site.
As for adding metatags, see here:
