I did a backup of my WP site before updating, but I got a PHP Fatal Error and my site completely crashed and is giving me a 500 error.

This was the error message I was getting:

“PHP Fatal error: Cannot declare class WP_User_Request, because the name is already in use in /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/user.php on line 3657 Fatal error: Cannot declare class WP_User_Request, because the name is already in use in /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/user.php on line 3657 PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function wp_kses_normalize_entities() in /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/formatting.php:4305 Stack trace: #0 /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/class-wp-fatal-error-handler.php(190): esc_url(‘https://wordpre…’) #1 /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/class-wp-fatal-error-handler.php(147): WP_Fatal_Error_Handler->display_default_error_template(Array, false) #2 /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/class-wp-fatal-error-handler.php(52): WP_Fatal_Error_Handler->display_error_template(Array, false) #3 [internal function]: WP_Fatal_Error_Handler->handle() #4 {main} thrown in /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 4305 Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function wp_kses_normalize_entities() in /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/formatting.php:4305 Stack trace: #0 /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/class-wp-fatal-error-handler.php(190): esc_url(‘https://wordpre…’) #1 /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/class-wp-fatal-error-handler.php(147): WP_Fatal_Error_Handler->display_default_error_template(Array, false) #2 /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/class-wp-fatal-error-handler.php(52): WP_Fatal_Error_Handler->display_error_template(Array, false) #3 [internal function]: WP_Fatal_Error_Handler->handle() #4 {main} thrown in /var/www/vhosts/tmtrov.com.au/staging.tmtrov.com.au/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 4305”

    Hi there,

Your site is not hosted on WordPress.com, but using the open source WordPress.org software at another hosting provider. We cannot help with this in the WordPress.com forums.

Please post in the self-hosted WordPress forums instead for help:

That is a weak excuse. It was the your 5.3 update that crashed this, others and my site. Where it is hosted is irrelevant, the problem stems with WP!

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
