When I try to add a new post to my blog, I get sent to the wp-admin site although I’d like the normal view. Then, in wp-admin, under “Add New Post” I get an error message, printed here:

Connection lost. Saving has been disabled until you’re reconnected. We’re backing up this post in your browser, just in case.

The blog I need help with is cmmalonedotcom.wordpress.com.

Hi there, it’s possible that your current Internet connection isn’t 100% solid. If that happens, the system takes preventative measures to try to avoid you losing your post.

Are you in a location that you’ve posted from often in the past – has this ever happened before?

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I don’t think it’s my internet connection, as I’ve tried both from home and from work, both of which have pretty good connections. I’ve also tried repeatedly over the period of several days, always with the same problem (my first post, made about 10 days ago, went fine but I’ve had this trouble ever since then).

Hi Katie, thanks for the additional information, that’s helpful. To see if it might be a network issue, the next time you see that message, could you please try a traceroute right away and send us the results? Here’s how to do one on a Mac:

    1. Go to Applications -> Utilities folder.
    2. Open Network Utility
    3. Click Traceroute tab, enter the domain (s0.wp.com), and click Trace.
    4. Copy all the output by clicking in a blank area, press Command–A to select all the text, then Command–C to copy it to your clipboard, then paste (Command–V) the output in your reply.

Thanks for the traceroute. Just to be sure – are you experiencing the error that you mentioned earlier right now?

Would you mind trying two more things:

    – does the same thing happen in a different browser, like Firefox or Safari?
    – could you try turning off all your Chrome extensions and add-ons, and restarting the browser? Here are instructions for doing that:

    http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=187443

Scroll down to the section called “Temporarily disable extensions.”

Let me know how it goes!

    Hi,

To answer your questions in order:

    1. Yes, I’m currently having the problem.

    2. My browser of choice is Chrome. Trying in Firefox, when I log in, I get a blank light-gray screen with a blue toolbar on top (buttons are Reader, Stats, My Blogs, Freshly Pressed, New Post–none of the buttons seem to do anything when I press them, although the URL changes).

    3. I disabled my extensions, and restarted Chrome. The problem remains, and looks the same.

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the information! I’ll go with numbering too. :-)

    1. Going back to something you said earlier:

When I try to add a new post to my blog, I get sent to the wp-admin site although I’d like the normal view.

What do you mean by “the normal view”?

Is the place where you’re seeing this error here, when clicking Add New in the sidebar menu?

    https://cmmalonedotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

    2. Would it be possible to send along a screenshot (JPEG, PNG or PDF format, if possible) of exactly where you’re adding a post when you see this error, to help in troubleshooting?

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

    3. In Firefox, are you able to add a post from here?

    https://cmmalonedotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

Click Add New in the sidebar menu – are you able to make a post from there?

    Thanks!

One more thing: could you also please confirm the address of the site where you’re experiencing this problem? Is it also happening in your other sites? Thanks!

    Hi,

    1. “Normal view” probably isn’t a great name for it. I was seeing what looks like bare HTML, with links and stuff but no nice CSS formatting. I’ve replicated it somewhat with a friend’s wordpress site. I’ve taken 2 screenshots, the one with the orange background is what I see when I’m signed in to wordpress, and the one with the white background is what I see when I’m not. I don’t see a way to attach them in this session, but I can email them if you send me an address.

    2. The links you sent me work somewhat :) Here’s what I tried, and what happened:
    a) follow link that you posted. It looks great all of a sudden. Interesting.
    b) try navigating there myself, by putting “wordpress.com” (without quotes) in the navbar. Get light gray empty screen, light blue tool bar at the top with buttons that don’t seem to do anything.
    c) try navigating to “https://wordpress.com”. Looks like in b), but now the light gray screen has some content on it (suggesting that I find some blogs to follow) and I also have a sidebar with some navigation tools.
    d) go back to the link you sent me, the one ending in edit.php. Write in a test message, and hit “publish”
    e) Get what looks like a confirmation screen, but again all in html, no formatting. Screenshot taken.

Let me know a good place to send the screenshots if those would be helpful.

Thanks for all the info! For the screenshots, my apologies, I forgot to mention that if you upload them into your Media Library I’ll be able to see them there. Just let me know which site you’ve uploaded them to. Thanks!

Ok, I’ve uploaded to the media section of cmmalonedotcom.wordpress.com. There are 3 pictures: 2 alternate views of my friend’s site, and the bare-HTML-looking confirmation page that I get after publishing my test message.

Those screenshots are very helpful, thanks. Could you let me know the address of the Steph & Chris wedding site so I can do some testing? Thanks!

Ah – never mind, I was able to make out the URL in one of your screenshots!

I’ll do some more research and get back to you.

    1. Go to Applications -> Utilities folder.
    2. Open Network Utility
    3. Click Traceroute tab, enter the domain (s2.wp.com), and click Trace. 4. Copy all the output by clicking in a blank area, press Command–A to select all the text, then Command–C to copy it to your clipboard, then paste (Command–V) the output in your reply.
