WP login problems with Firefox 29
-
Hi — right now I’m experimenting with the new Firefox browser (Australis, v29, beta9) that will be released as a final to the public next week or so. For testing purposes I use a clean installation, with default network settings, without add-ons etc.
It turns out that the WordPress.com login procedure doesn’t work (or works only partially) in this browser. Somehow (maybe false intuition) the problem reminds me of the certificates problem that a while ago got in the way of European users like me — but this may well be something completely different. Actually I’m not even sure if what we’ve got here is primarily a Firefox problem, or a WordPress problem. I’d like someone from the WP staff to comment, if possible…
Problem description:
Login to the main WordPress.com page results in an endless loop. After filling in user name and password and hitting the blue “Log in” button, the screen jumps back to the generic not-logged-in main WordPress.com page. Any next try to login keeps gives the same loop.
A more direct loop happens when you try to directly open a My Stats page — URL
http://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.com%2Fmy-stats%2F&reauth=1
— this produces the login screen with browser-saved user name and password pre-entered, but… hitting the blue “Log in” button keeps giving the very same login screen instead of opening the intended page. In other words, whatever you do, your Stats page cannot be opened from the new Firefox browser…Strangely (and this may be an indication of what’s wrong) when I try to directly open a Dashboard page, the same login screen does work as intended — it accepts the login, and opens the Dashboard page. URL here is (in my case)
http://stayontop.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fstayontop.wordpress.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1
When by clicking in the black top bar of the logged-in Dashboard page you try to open My Stats however, even though you clearly are already logged in, you still get a blank WP log-in page again — one that keeps circling in the fruitless loop described above.
Summary: in the new Firefox, WP login seems to work for pages of the type
http://<strong>prefix.</strong>wordpress.com//whatever
but WP login seems to be completely broken for pages of the typehttp://wordpress.com//whatever
.I tested this theory by trying
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/support#postform
in the new Firefox. And indeed, unlike the main WordPress pages, that one opened without a hitch!I’d appreciate some comment from the WordPress experts. If this is a problem on the WordPress side, it better be remedied soon!
Thanks for your attention — Henk

UPDATE —
Same problem exists with Firefox 29 final version (installed and tried it out today).Login to any wordpress.com URL doesn’t work at all. Login to any prefix.wordpress.com URL works, but clicking from there on any wordpress.com link (without prefix) gets you a not-working login screen even though you were already logged in.
No such problem in other browsers.Anyone else see the same problem?

UPDATE
Finally solved the problem. It looked like it had to do with a setting that excluded “third-party cookies”.
If you experience the same problem, in Firefox go to Options -> Privacy -> Use custom settings for history, and set “Accept third-party cookies” to “always”. That should solve the erratic login behavior.
