wp.COM or .ORG?

Is this ad legit and what does wp.ORG cost?

Just got this ad from Dick Detering ([link redacted by staff])

Are the difference between .COM and .ORG accurate?

We are a small chapter with an annual budget of $300, use WP as a website, and don’t sell anything, but would like to offer some new and used books for sale.

We are primarily looking to attract new chapter members in Maine. My guess an ORG would not fit into our budget nor provide us with more exposure than what we get with the free COM site.

    Comments please

The blog I need help with is ffrfmaine.org.

    Hi there,

That person regularly posts ads like that in the forums under various usernames. We consider them to be a spammer (and I’ve also removed that link from your post).

The information about the differences between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are fairly accurate – have have those same differences published on our own support pages:

    WordPress.com and WordPress.org

The WordPress.org software is free for anyone to use, but unless you run your own server you need to pay someone for hosting. That’s what Dick is trying to sell via his “add”. There are a huge variety of hosts available, most with several hosting plans based on your needs. It can cost anything from $3 to $5000 a month.

Should you decide to go self-hosted, do your own research, read online reviews on different hosts, and most importantly, pick a hosting plan that has the bandwidth, storage space and support you need. You’ll see our recommended hosts at the second link I gave above. Also ask on the WordPress.org forums, as the users there will likely have direct experience with a number of different hosting providers.

If you want to sell low volume items and are fine with doing it manually using a contact form and PayPal button you can do it here. For an integrated shopping cart I’d recommend the WooCommerce plugin on a self-hosted site.
