I was born a Jew, in Warsaw, on June 2nd, 1936, to non-religious & not particularly Jewish-conscious parents who had a clear understanding of enough of what it means to be a Jew when they fled from Warsaw with me the day the German planes began bombing there, & had even prepared the resources that after many travails got us to Shanghai, where we lived through war & where I became conscious that I was a Jew & went to the Shanghai Jewish School & my father died in the Shanghai Jewish Hospital six months after the war in Europe ended & was buried in the Shanghai Jewish cemetery.
